Thinking about trying something new (again). Inspired by the Steampunk Aesthetic, linked to my love of the pulp and superheroic eras, flavored with a bit of the fantastic, it will be tentatively titled “The Ringman Chronicles”.
Walter M. Ringman is an American descendant of one of the world’s first hyper-heroes: Lord Ringman. In a world that has developed differently from our own, Walter fantasizes about inheriting his ancestor’s “Power Ring” and becoming a hyper-hero in his own right. But as each birthday passes, that particular dream seems less and less likely to come true.
The world of the Ringman Chronicles is one in which the North American continent is politically fractures and the United States as we know them never became the cultural and technological powerhouse of our world. Instead, the British Empire retains a stronger sense of political and cultural dominance and technology has developed along a more steampunk-inspired path.
It is also a world of the fantastic. Snake-men (Bobbi-Bobbis) are the native inhabitants of the continent of Mu (what we know as Australia). Markov Beringei, a hyper-intelligent gorilla created by a mad scientist, has founded a nation of apes in deepest darkest africa. The Pirate Princes rule the skies with thier Zeppelins and Air Sloops. And hyper-humans, the stuff of comic books in our world, are very much real.
I am working through the political landscape and broad-stroke history currentlly. I’m also thinking about the life of “Poor Walter”. More notes as the Chronicles evolve.

/ July 23, 2008Interesting. I think the feel of old world heroism (pulp, steampunk, daring two fisted derring doers) versus the new world superheroism. (Magic words, aliens, and tragic accidents the yield excelsiors new humanity) might make a good theme..
